As an AS9100 certified magnet supplier, Dura Magnetics must continually ensure that our business and manufacturing practices properly follow the requirements set forth by the standard. With AS9100C being phased out and becoming fully replaced with the revised AS9100D standard on September 15, 2018, we have already taken the appropriate steps to ensure compliance with this latest revision of the AS9100 standard before its final implementation date.
We are proud to announce that Dura Magnetics is now an AS9100D certified company.
What is AS9100?
The AS9100 is a Quality Management System standard for the manufacturing industry designed to improve and maintain quality and consistency for all aircraft and aerospace companies. The AS9100 standard is based on the ISO 9001 standard, but has additional requirements designed to address specific aspects related to the aerospace industry. Many major manufacturers within the aerospace industry endorse the standard throughout their supply chain. For many OEMs, it is a requirement for a supplier to be AS9100 certified to work with them.
Why was a revision of AS9100 needed?
The release of ISO 9001:2015 had some changes that prompted updating the AS9100 standard. These updates would become this latest version of the AS9100 standard, AS9100D.
Why was ISO 9001 revised?
ISO 9001 standards are reviewed every five years to ensure they stay current and to implement any improvements that may be determined through real-world observations. The newest version, ISO 9001:2015, puts more of its focus on manufacturing and parts performance.
For companies like Dura Magnetics that are accredited to the AS9100 standard, there are benefits. Having the AS9100D certification acts as a stamp of quality to companies looking for suppliers that follow strict industry standards. This accreditation also provides more opportunities to work with a wider variety of companies, as some require being AS9100 certified in order to work with them.
Changes in AS9100D:
- Product & Public Safety
AS9100D addresses product safety considerations throughout a product’s life cycle, helping to minimize product risk and ensure public safety.
- Human Factors
Realizing that human factors like fatigue, stress, distraction, and attitude can affect nonconformity in manufacturing is the reason AS9100D requires a review of certain elements during the root cause analysis. This gives Dura Magnetics time to take corrective action to ensure the same issue does not occur in the future.
- Risk-Based Thinking
As part of our strategic and operational planning, Dura Magnetics conducts risk-based thinking throughout our quality management system. This means that we take a systematic approach to considering risk, rather than treating prevention as a separate component of our quality management system.
- Counterfeit Products
Counterfeit products have become more and more of an issue in recent years. Unqualified companies will make parts that look very much like the real thing but without being held to the standards necessary to properly meet the requirements for the product needed, and no true assurance that the parts meet all required specifications. These products are often able to be sold at a reduced price compared to parts coming from a qualified manufacturer at the correct specifications, so the market is flooded with less than standard parts that are cheaper in price. When companies buy these less expensive products in an effort to save on costs, quality and safety issues eventually arise. This is one major reason many OEMs will not buy from companies that are not AS9100D certified.
- Configuration Management
Configuration management is a systems engineering process for maintaining consistency of a product’s performance, functionality, and physical attributes with its requirements, design, and operational information throughout its life. This is another way to combat the counterfeit products in the market.
At Dura Magnetics, we made the effort to be AS9100D certified because we care about the quality of our products and have an ongoing desire to maintain high levels of quality, reliability, and trust with our customers.
